Depending on where you live, spring is in the air. Crocuses are popping up everywhere in BC’s lower mainland and coastal areas, cherry trees are in bloom, forsythia about to burst… but I know that most of the rest of BC and Canada are still experiencing genuine Canadian winter. Still, it’s Spring Break season and for those who are trying to think of things to keep kiddies occupied – here’s some thrifty ideas:
- Read Actual Books. Head to your local library and check out enough books, magazines (and DVDs too, if you must J ) to spend afternoons or evenings in the pursuit of imagination. Many libraries also program for Spring Break, so find out what they’re offering for kids. Remember – you pay for your library through your taxes, so use it!
2. Craft up a storm. On Facebook today, David Suzuki’s Queen of Green suggested this monster of an idea for crafting using 100% recycled materials – all of which you can probably find around your house. Another great source for thrifty crafting ideas is England’s Lulastic and the Hippyshake – she is not only creative but often a hilarious read.
3. Head to your local Thrift Shop, of course. If the crafting blogs give you ideas and you don’t have all the supplies in your house, then thrift shops are the best place to go to stock up. You can find books there too if you’d rather own books and not worry about late return fees at the library.
You can also make a game of it for your kids. Give each kid a loonie or twoonie ($1 or $2 coin in Canada – if you’re not from here, choose your country’s equivalent!) and tell them they can purchase whatever they want with that amount. This will become a teachable moment without your kids realizing they’re learning. Do the math – adding up the cost of each thing you choose. What’s more important? Quality or Quantity: will you buy one item for $1 or 10 items for 10 cents each? What happens if you find something that’s 25 cents above the limit? (You should think about your response to that before heading into the shop!) You could be starting a life-long thrift ethic with your kids.
4. Breathe. This is for you parents and I’m totally serious. I am a yoga enthusiast and I think the best thing yoga has taught me is the restorative power of the breath. Start and end each day by breathing deeply: stand or sit tall, take a breath that fills your lungs from top to bottom, hold it and then breathe in a little bit more. Then let it all out, pulling your navel in and emptying your lungs. Do it five times – you’ll feel great!
